Please note: As this module is an element of the 11 Hour Prevention of Medical Errors Certificate Course, you cannot take both for CME credit or Recertification credits.


The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Inc. (ABQAURP), is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

ABQAURP designates this enduring material for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    Course Description & Objectives
  • Discuss definitions of the terms patient safety and medical error and how the definitions change over time.
  • Discuss the interface between medical quality and patient safety.
  • Relate the three error types of underuse, overuse, and misuse to patient safety initiatives.
  • Describe the work of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
  • Identify some of the actors, both organizational and individual, in the patient safety field.
  • Recognize emerging trends in the fields of patient safety and error reduction.
  • Identify some of the organizations that currently rate the quality of health care in the US
  • Discuss the role of culture in the patient safety movement.
  • Enumerate some barriers to progress in the patient safety movement.
  • Quantify the magnitude of the patient safety and medical error issues.
  • Evaluate progress in the US between the publication of the first IOM report and 10 years later.
