Privacy and HIPAA: New Times, New Rules

The Physician Payments Sunshine Act (PPSA) requires medical product manufacturers to disclose to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) any payments or other transfers of value made to physicians or teaching hospitals. Most of the debate surrounding the implementation of the PPSA centers around two general issues: the regulatory and legal challenges of establishing a national public reporting system; and how reporting will ultimately affect the behavior of patients, providers, and industry. Concerns over public misperception may, in turn, have unpredictable effects on physicians' behavior.

This online course will provide insight into how responsible transparency can help to promote integrity and increase public trust. This course will examine HIPAA issues for 2019 and how individual state actions are impacting healthcare privacy laws.

This session was recorded live at our 2019 Annual Health Care Quality & Patient Safety Conference and is a portion of the online course entitled: Connecting People, Purpose & Passion. They may be taken individually to earn incremental CME/CE credits. However, if you plan on taking the full 8-hour course, you will not be able to claim credit for these individual sessions.

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
  • Illustrate the scope and interaction of HIPAA with other privacy requirements
  • Identify new state laws governing privacy and related requirement
  • Employ specific steps any practitioner can take to avoid compromising patient privacy
