A Multidisciplinary Approach in Reducing C. difficile Incidence Rates in a Rural Hospital Utilizing Innovative Strategies

In an effort to address Leapfrog scores and improve quality and patient safety metrics around hospital-acquired conditions, Dr. Parvathatreddy led his team at the 130-bed rural hospital, Wilkes Medical Center, the only rural hospital within the Wake Forest Baptist Health System with an open ICU managed by hospitalists. After assessing staff knowledge, implementing best safety practices, monitoring outcomes and providing feedback to stakeholders, and reviewing charts of all 2022 C. diff cases, they were able to implement strategies to reduce C. diff cases by 55.5%, an improved Leapfrog rating, and significant improvement in other hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Initiatives included the Hospital at Home program and the Virtual Hospitalist that have improved access to quality care in rural communities and suburban areas.
