Patient Safety Certificate Course


This certificate course is comprised of three course modules each containing 4.0 CME/CE contact hours. In order to receive your Certificate in Patient Safety, you must complete all three modules. Once the course, final assessment and survey are completed, your CE certificate and 12.0 credit hours will be updated in our database. You will also receive a Patient Safety Certificate to display proudly. This competed course will become a valuable resource to rely on throughout your health care career.

In Module 1 of the Patient Safety Certificate Course, we will discuss the relative risk for harm to patients in the health care system. Large studies and reports, such as the ones from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, revealed that harm to patients from medical errors is rampant and ultimately much of it is preventable.

Armed with that knowledge, Module 2 will focus on how health care organizations can both find and identify the risks that exist for their patients, as well as learn how to mitigate and prevent errors from occurring in the first place.

In Module 3, we explore the framework for success in advancing patient safety in health care organizations. Leadership is one of the most critical elements in a successful patient safety program. Safety is dependent on senior leaders in healt hcare organizations to direct efforts that foster the culture and commitment required to address the underlying systems that allow medical errors and harm to occur to patients.

At the conclusion of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the historical progress of patient safety in health care
  • Discuss the impact of the Institute of Medicine report, To Err is Human, on patient safety practices across the United States
  • Identify key drivers for patient safety
  • Define safety culture and systems thinking in health care as it relates to improved patient safety
  • Explain the role of regulatory involvement in health care as it relates to patient safety
  • Describe the mechanisms used to engage patients and their family members in improving patient safety
  • Describe how patient safety risks can be managed in health care settings
  • Discuss the top patient safety risks in health care
  • Identify methodologies for identifying patient safety risks in the local health care setting
  • Describe the role of event reporting, data mining and trigger tools in identifying and mitigating patient safety risks
  • Discuss methodologies for responding to medical errors when they occur
  • Describe how patient safety risks can be managed in health care settings
  • Discuss the role of leadership in advancing patient safety
  • Identify methodologies for the use of data in designing and measuring a patient safety program
  • Describe the role of process design and process improvement in a patient safety program
  • Discuss methodologies for improved team communication in health care
  • Identify methods for safer practice in health care

The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Inc. (ABQAURP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
